Today, WSCH is the only center on the near west side of Cleveland that provides school-age day care and transportation. Parents begin dropping their children off at WSCH as early as 6:30 a.m. Children receive a light, nutritious breakfast and then are transported to their schools by Kidsmobile.
The children are picked up from their schools at the end of the day and returned to WSCH where they receive a snack and engage in recreational and educational enrichment activities including homework assistance, tutoring and special time spent in the Beverly Corrigan Learning Lab, on the playground, and in our multi-purpose recreation room. Parents may return for their children as late as 6:00 p.m. In addition to before and after school care, WSCH is open all day on most school holidays and teacher in-service days. We also conduct a full day Summer Day Camp.
For the 2007 - 2008 School Year West Side Community House's Day Care Program will provide transportation to and from WSCH to the five Cleveland Public Schools listed below, as well as Urban Community School. If your child is enrolled in a Cleveland Public School but not attending one of these schools, you may request to have your child transferred. The schools are listed below with a link to their websites for further information.

The Learning Lab offers many enrichment activities for children grades K-6 while still making learning fun! These activities are Ohio State standards-based and are in the areas of Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading/Language Arts and Computers. The Learning Lab also offers a regular tutoring program with both on-staff and volunteer tutors who use the lab’s wealth of materials when working with their students.
Each year, over 65 different children spend over 125 hours each in the Learning Lab. Since its inception, nearly 600 children have participated in the educational enrichment activities the lab offers.
A teacher in our Day Care Program tailors individual activities for each student to improve academic improvement using the six learning lab areas:
The Lab has 5 new computers with high-speed internet access. Children complete homework, have access to over 50 educational games and visit various learning and enrichment sites daily. Children also learn basic computer skills and internet safety.
Children can relax on the couch and choose from a large library of books. They also have a variety of activities they can complete after reading books. Other activities include: educational language games, magazines, writing activities, and more.
Students learn about cultures, history and our world in the social studies area. Activities include: community helpers, dress-up, various U.S. and State recognition games, cultural awareness games, and a monthly historical theme with various activities.
In the math center, children can use the cash register to learn money concepts, play any one of the many mathematical games or complete a math activity sheet for “High Fives.” The math area also has many tools for homework help.
Activities in the science center range from looking at slides on a microscope to conducting an observation using the Learning Lab pet, "Howard." There is also a variety of science games, experiments, books and activities from which to choose.
All students have access to regular after school tutoring. The teacher and two tutors are regularly available to help students with homework and educational enrichment based on an initial tutoring form filled out by the parents.
Each center has many activities from which the children may choose. Children are rewarded for completing activities, for proper behavior and, most of all, for bringing in homework through the “High Five” system. One day a week students are able to redeem High Fives at the Lab Store.
